Not what I was hoping for

Autohrs of one of my favorite novel series recently made the ARC of their next book available, and (weeks later) I have finally found a quiet moment to dive in. And. hmmmmm. I can't tell if I'm just not in the mood right now, or if this really is one of the most boring first chapters I've even slogged through. I could swear there were paragraphs just dropped in randomly as well. Chapter two seemed only slight improvement.

Now I'm contemplating my options. Do I just keep reading, hoping it will become the delicious experience I was expecting? Do I start again, and take notes about which parts were confusing or unnecessarily droning? (That sounds like work, and not even work I'm very good at.)

or perhaps I will finally put some time into some of my other pending projects, and let entertainment book reading wait for another day.

So many books, so little time. If a book doesn't click in the first chapter, I usually give up and move to something else. Even if I suspect it's my fault and not the book's.

Something I noticed as I was trying to work my way through the Chicon Hugo packet: I am sick of books that throw a glossary's worth of invented terminology at me right at the beginning. Yes, I realize that "gromp monsters" and "outgroup zones" and "Vorgulians" and "rule 17 alerts" or whatever are going to be explained later... but if I cannot make Any Sense At All of what's happening on the first page then goodbye.

Is it too much to ask authors to build me a character before they build the world?

I am normally very tough on books - not only do they have to grab me right from the first, but they have to hang on or I skip ahead (or just stop).

This particular book is getting many more chances than it deserves because it has delightful earlier siblings. I keep hoping.
