I enjoy reading you all so much

And yet I am so ambivalent about writing anything myself.

But I've decided to try to put something together once a day, and post it here. I'm keeping busy, having fun, but don't have any particular thing I can point to and say "this is what I am right now".
I'm a mom, a spouse, a housekeeper (needs improvement), a gardener-to-be. But none of these fill the same slots that "bookseller" or "particle accelerator operator" or "optical design engineer" used to fill.

I work part time at the Post Office as a Rural Mail Carrier, and it's fun (and it pays!) but it's not what I am.

I don't really need a job title to be happy with myself, but not having one has made me realize how darn convenient they were.

I have a lot of trouble with the job title problem, too.

I think it would be more of an irritation for me if I met a lot more new people. But one of the side effects of having moved to the Forest Moon of Seattle is that I rarely get to talk with anyone at all.

Another reason to do more outreach on line.

I feel your pain. And about the first thing Americans ask you is what you do. Depending on my perception of their sense of humor and the gravit of the situation I either tell them I'm a Kept Woman or that I'm retired.

Tomorrow I plan to cheat, and post the longish reply I wrote to another bookstore this morning about things to think about when getting ready for a book fair.

Surely one can argue for the importance of quality over quantity?

Moms are "project coordinators".

You could be a "line courier," I suppose, with a scheduled route...

Ah, but in both cases I don't see them as something that defines what I do or who I am.

I mean, when I was bookselling I did that about 12 to 14 hours a day. Momming doesn't take anything like that kind of commitment, now that the spawn is older and well trained.
