I've been burrowing through piles of papers boxed and untouched since the shop closed and we moved. Old sales records, stacks of paid invoices, customer data. Triage results in several distinct piles:
1) nice clean paper with sensitive information - to be shredded,
2) cardstock, receipts, odd bits with sensitive information - to be burned,
3) catalogs, sales information, press sheets - to be recycled,
4) vast collection of cover flats, kept as a reference tool - hopefully find a new home, otherwise recycle,
5) last and by far least (in volume) the few small bits I want to keep.

A tedious and seemingly endless task that doesn't even have an impressive result - it's not like I can point to all the boxes that aren't there anymore.

But you can point to all the lovely open space you have once you're done . . .

Good on ya! I need to take your industriousness as inspiration ....

But yes indeed, it's hard to point with pride to a negative. Just try to hold onto the "Before" picture in your own head. ;]

Why shred some things and burn some others?

Both processes are somewhat time consuming - but shredding produces useful packing material. I would shred it all if the small machine I use would tolerate all those staples.

For that matter, the fire would take less time if I just made a huge pile outside, but I've been using the little stick burning fireplace in the living room.

I know the feeling; lately I've been kicking myself into action to get caught up on stuff. It's tedious, but nice when it finally happens.

Sounds like what I have to do with my mother's piles-o-stuff, except at least you have a clue as to what you're doing with it. I have no good idea what needs to be kept. :/
