About five weeks ago I decided to forgo my usual foods that had caffeine, which would be soda pop and the occasional Rocket Chocolate. My motivation was pretty mild - every now and then I can feel my heart pounding a bit (as if I could hear it) and I wondered if caffeine might be involved.

Today's lunch was cheese sandwich with some fries, and I realized that a Coke would be the absolute most-wanted drink with that. And there's a bunch in the fridge (for my son). And I'm a bit tired of milk, tea and water (my other options).

So I had a Coke with lunch. And, ya know, it really wasn't anywhere near as tasty as I imagined it would be. Convenient I guess, but after this it's going to be even easier to stick to the alternatives.

Heart-wise, I haven't noticed any change one way or the other, so it's probably not caffeine, and may well be nothing more than that one of my three part-times jobs involves a lot of waiting around in a really quiet place.

Yeah, for me at least, the loser in the Cola Wars seems to have been "Cola."

I have some physical issues which caffeine makes worse so my doctor told me to "cut back". Give up coffee or Pepsi? I gave up the Pepsi... about 25 years ago... now I don't know how I ever drank it... Once in a while I'll have a pop-- sprint or squirt or root beer... but even those are getting pretty bad. I think I'm going to be the Decaf Ice Tea Queen this summer, as that's been the best tasting drink this spring.

I gave up colas about 12 years ago. I got a free refill of one of those vats they call glasses at a restaurant. That was at lunch. I was awake all night with my heart pounding. I may have cola once or twice a year these days and seldom finish the whole thing.

Watch cold medicines. I had to give up pseudaphdrine long before it got hard to buy.

Yep -- as soon as you don't have it for awhile, your body comes to its senses and realizes that the stuff doesn't actually taste good.

And there are myriad reasons not to drink it beyond the caffeine. Who thought it was a smart idea to DRINK phosphoric acid? Hello?

I don't really like the taste of any colas anymore. I drink a lot of iced tea, and even more plain water. And while I love the smell of coffee, the reality is that a cup of it is almost always followed by heartburn, so, back to water or tea.
