Back on line briefly

It's been a great vacation! I've gotten to visit with much of my family (a very good thing, for those who don't know them) and hang out with scores of my friends.

I have not been able to spend much if any time with email, LJ, or my various freelance jobs, which has been strange, but probably also a good thing.

In a few hours we fly back to Seattle. Tomorrow I'll be back at the studio to face the surging tsunami of unanswered email. I'm looking forward to it.

Something I wanted to scrawl down where I can find it again is the pancake recipe:

Our New Years party host had enjoyed the pancakes we made at home so much that last year we mailed three bags of the mix we use (Snoqualamie Pancake Mix) to the party and make pancakes for everyone. This year I never got around to mailing them - and when I mentioned this lost opportunity to my sister-in-law (the fabulous cook) she wrote from memory the scratch recipe she uses.

Buttermilk Pancakes

1 cup buttermilk
1 egg
4 tbs oil

1 cup flour
3 tbs sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt

Blend the wet ingredients separately from the dry, then combine the two.

My brother later elaborated on where the recipe came from. There was an issue of Consumer Reports some unnamed years ago that reviewed and rated a number of packaged mixes. It also included this recipe, remarking that this rated higher than all the mixes.

He says that several years later, Consumer Reports again reviewed the packaged mixtures, but did not mention the scratch option, leading him to conclude they dropped it out of pressure from the other products. (I sorta doubt that one.)
