Dec. 24th, 2008

Mike and I walked into town today, motivated by groceries and curiosity about how bad the roads really are.

It's about two miles each way, and the answer is the side roads are all but impassable. There's no way our little car would have made it, even with chains on.

The main road was scraped, but still had icy patches. It was raining / sleeting on the way home, so by tomorrow morning I'm sure that will be a nice hard layer of ice on top of what used to be slushy snow.

SO glad that we don't need to be anywhere else, and that the power grid here is affected more by wind than snow.

I noticed that Seattle is operating under a state of emergency because of all the snow, and that more of the same is in the forecast. I hope you'll be able to get to the airport on Sunday! Of course, the weather may well change to "normal" by then... for us, 50°F is predicted for this Saturday. Good grief.

I decided to shovel the balcony (just off our second-floor bedroom) yesterday and was stunned to see snow piled 3-1/2 feet high. It took some pushing just to get the storm door open, then about 40 minutes of shoveling to clear the deck. This was not light, fluffy snow -- it was incredibly heavy, wet, sopping cold stuff that's just one step away from being a solid block of ice. I'm so glad I opened that door when I did, or we might have lost our balcony! (Well, it's not beyond the possibilities... roofs around the region are now caving in...)

Good luck getting out. I really hope to see you next week.

Oh... and because freezing rain is predicted for tomorrow morning, K and I are going to Isher tonight to bathe the cats, so you can see us on the cam if you want. We'll stay over til tomorrow afternoon so I can get the house in order for the party!

Congrats on a wise choice and a successful outing.

In general I really like living out in the sticks like this. That attitude is likely to change if I take a normal commuting-type job in Seattle, but we'll see.
