No WorldCon for me

I'm in Chicago to help G on her path to recovery from the surgery she had on July 20th.
That recovery has been much slower than hoped for, and it now seems certain that when she does check out of the hospital she's going to need full time help at home until more strength and ability comes back.
So I'm staying here in town to help while she's still in the hospital, and more importantly to be available when she checks out, whichever day that turns out to be.

I'm mostly sorry for the poor Programming folks, because I had agreed to be on five different panels, moderating three of them. Now they've got to make some last minute changes, and I know how not-fun that is when you're in the final stretch of preparations.

I'm also sorry to not be live-blogging the event for Con Reporter, a fairly new project that I find quite fascinating. Now that I know that the hospital has free wireless, I plan to LJ and twitter about the convention from afar. It's not at all like being there, but it might provide an interesting side view. All posting will have to work around whatever G needs, so expect sporaticity (not a word).

Depending on how things progress here, I'm now thinking I might bop up to the Wizard World Chicago Comic-Con (or whatever the official name is now). having not planned for it in advance, I don't know of anyone personally who's going - so if you are let me know! The only webcomic creator that I've seen mention it is Jennie Breeden of Devil's Panties.

And now, off to triage email! (It's been a couple of days since I sat down with the laptop.)

I'm sorry you can't make it. Best wishes to G for health and recovery.

Sorry I won't see you in Montreal.

Bummer on two counts!
Hey, I'm sorry for G - thank goodness you can be there (what, is Barbara "too busy"?) - but this has got to be a big letdown for you, not getting to Montreal! Good thing you were raised by that old toughie P.I., so your expectations never get out of hand.

Seriously, I hope she feels better soon. Seems harder to regain strength, mobility, ability, etc., after a certain point in time. And I hope you have some fun in the city with 'real weather' (t-storms, etc.).

BTW, did your cell phone # stay the same?

Re: Bummer on two counts!
Thanks to the magic of iPhone the laptop loads a complete image of the phone into the new chassis. I only lost the pictures I had taken at Comic-Con.
Several of those shots were also taken by Cheyenne, so there are only a couple of costumes the world did not see immortalized.

The road to recovery remains rocky, so it's a good thing I'm here.

rocky recovery
Okay, well, we will do the Quakerly thing and hold her In the Light. At this point it is probably both the least, and the most, that I can do for you.

If there is anything else that is more practical that comes to mind, let me know. I'll certainly do whatever I can for you and Mike.

What hospital...?

Sorry for the delayed response - I haven't been checking my comments properly!

She's at St. Joseph's, down on Lake Shore and Diversey, and seems very well cared for in general. But we're both glad I'm here.

I hope you hang around Chicago long enough for me to see you.

I've mostly been going straight from hospital to apartment and back, but meeting folks for dinner after visiting hours end (8:00 pm) has worked pretty well. I'll be in town until the 19th.

Will miss seeing you in Montreal. But you're doing a mighty good thing.

Sorry to have missed seeing you, but it sounds like the only thing you really _could_ do to stay. Don't know if I know G, but best wishes to her nonetheless.
