New-to-me norms for job applications

Even though I have it on the best authority that this is the way things work now, I am still thrown by the idea that companies no longer respond to job applications unless they are interested in going to the next step of an interview.

I'm also having trouble wrapping my head around the idea that it's OK to apply for multiple openings at the same company at the same time. But, since one of the job postings I have applied for has three very similar other ones also open, I guess that's what I'm going to do.

Still feels strange.

The concepts of courtesy or mutual obligation have left the building, the city, the state, and the nation.
Many agencies only keep a file for six months before trashing it. I've filled out the same sixteen forms in order to be interviewed by some wet-behind-the-ears newbie who didn't even know how naive s/he was, sometimes at the same desk, three and four times in the same office.
I try to keep close enough track to only apply once for any opening, which is challenging enough when a dozen agencies are all advertising it, but I'll re-apply to the same company two or three times a year.
