Wakeful, Japan earthquake, tsunami warning

For no particular reason, I woke up around 3:45 am and got up to putter around the net. Then at 4:32 am received a txt about a tsunami warning and a 8.9 quake in Japan.

Txted back with Ob xkcd.

Puget Sound is pretty darn well isolated from tsunami risks, and our house is 350 ft above water level anyway, so we're unlikely to be affected, but it sure looks like a lot of places are in for an unhappy morning.

I was having no luck at all with wording my feelings about the crisis, and then cakmpls said it better than I could.

You're right, that's an excellent post. Two of my favorite mysteries covered that as well: Lawrence Block, "Everybody dies" (in which several mainstays of the series are whacked) and Donald Westlake, "The axe" (in which people are killed for their jobs - and it's so realistic!)

Thank you for lifting me from the morbidity of it all.
